Lady and Her Sons Found after being Lost due to G.P.S.

03/22/2024

There were two lessons learned yesterday in the Nation Forest near Mt. Magazine:

First, do not trust G.P.S. every time. A lady and her two teen-age boys went to the Rich Mountain area in the National Forest to look for Twin Falls. She followed her G.P.S. and it took her down a forest road and then on a trail that was not made for her Honda Odyssey minivan. She ended up stuck on in a mud hole way out in the forest. Cell service was very spotty and she could only get through on 911 in some places. Our 911 Dispatch had a general location due to a ping on the cell phone but getting to the place was hard to find because the caller did not know the forest road number. Logan County Sheriff's Office Patrol Sgt. Stacy Wieburg and Arkansas State Park Ranger Patrick Siribouth went to area in their vehicles while Chief Deputy Josh Scott and I (Sheriff Massey) grabbed the Sheriff's Office side-by-side which has a winch on it.

Second lesson: We are blessed with good people who want to help out. While Chief Deputy Scott and I drove around, we ran into a friend, Mitch Robinson, who was out riding his side-by-side with his son, Race, enjoying Spring Break. We asked for his help. He then started looking and ran into Cameron Craig, Wesley Hamrick, Nathan Downs, and Megan Minor who were also out riding their ATVs and he told them about the search. We all spread out to look. Right before we were going to call out the All Hazards Team, Mitch and his son found the lady and her sons at their vehicle. The others listed above soon showed up and Mitch left to find us. He found us and when we got to the Honda Odyssey, the others were towing her out of the mud hole. We then followed her back to the main road to make sure she made it back safely.

We thank all of those involved. It is a good feeling when people help out and we get our task accomplished with a great ending!
