On January 7, 2026, the Logan County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a residence on State Highway 23 south of Booneville stating that a person at the residence had been shot. Due to the nature of the call, the Sheriff's Office requested back-up from the Booneville and Magazine Police Departments and when the deputy and officers arrived, they found Richard Lease, 38, deceased in a bedroom with several gunshot wounds. The victim lived at the residence. The deputy and officers took John Rich, III, 68, also of the residence, into custody without incident and they also recovered a rifle at the scene. John is the stepfather of the victim and there was a conflict between the two.
